Please donate and assist in CVPA’s mission to restore and re-purpose The Point!

Why are we appealing for your help?

There is an urgent need for stabilization at the 1855 Hoyt residence. Nature has created holes into the structure on the north and south sides, allowing weather and animal incursions into the basement, and there is a growing roof leak on the western side that will only get worse as time goes on. Also, a decayed dining room exterior roof overhang on the north wall needs immediate removal and sealing. Stabilization estimates for these issues amount to about $75,000. Also, in order to make practical, if temporary, use of the brick barns, utilities must be addressed: water, electric, sewer, heat, road access, etc.

Hoyt Carriageway Bridge Update

We have successfully raised the matching funds for our PTNY grant to repair the bridge over the railroad tracks, which will reopen Vaux’s historic entrance route into The Point, as well as restore a hugely popular hiking trail into Mills Norrie State Park and to the river. Weather permitting, the concrete repair will proceed in December, and the re-decking and fencing phases will be completed in the Spring.

What About the Hoyt Residence and Barns?

We continue to research repurposing for this unique site. Concepts include a Calvert Vaux Institute, a Hudson Valley Architecture Study Center, and a preservation trades campus to teach skills related to restoring or rehabilitating regional structures in need of work. There is palpable enthusiasm for this last idea.

We are preparing public presentations on the brick Carriage House and 5-Bay Garage, to raise awareness and attract interest in possible interim commercial or artistic uses.
