Articles and Excerpts

The compositions on this page offer the reader a wealth of information on The Point and Calvert Vaux.

The section of the Hudson River Valley Review entitled “Designing the Landscape That Made America” comprises articles stemming from CVPA’s 2022 symposium in Staatsburg on Vaux and his peers in the Hudson Valley.

The 1988 work by Joy Kestenbaum, “History of The Point,” is a comprehensive analysis of the site and its history, including illustrations and diagrams.

The 1998 Doell and Doell report entitled “A Landscape Management Plan for The Point,” commissioned by NYS Parks, is probably the most thorough and detailed research ever done on the site. It covers the entire landscape in great detail as well as the structures, and offers in-depth history, extensive factual information, assessments and recommendations.
